Dr Jessica Harbison | Paediatric Endocrinologist

BHSc., BMBS, FRACP, PhD, DCH

I am a paediatric endocrinologist, and my goal is to create a safe environment for the children I care for, ensuring they feel understood and supported throughout their healthcare journey.  I believe in fostering trust and collaboration with my patients and their families.

I accept referrals for children up to 18 years of age with a suspected or diagnosed endocrine issue.  I cannot accept referrals for management of diabetes (type 1 or type 2) as this is best managed with a multidisciplinary team and these referrals should be directed either to WCH or Flinders Medical Centre.

I have experience in managing a broad range of endocrine conditions including:

·       Growth

·       Thyroid

·       Pituitary

·       Adrenal

·       Puberty

·       Diabetes (type 1 and type 2)

·       PCOS

·       Obesity

My own journey began at Flinders University where I completed my medical degree before undertaking specialist training at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital (WCH).  I am a Staff Specialist in the Endocrine and Diabetes Unit at WCH.

Beyond clinical work I am actively involved in research and completed my PhD at the University of Adelaide in 2021.  My research explored the role of the gut microbiome, gut permeability, and the immune system in autoimmune disorders like type 1 diabetes. My efforts have been recognized with awards such as the Young Investigator Prize at the Australasian Paediatric Endocrine Group Annual Scientific Meeting.

I am currently actively involved in type 1 diabetes immunotherapy trials and multiple trials within the Vaccinology, Immunology and Research Trials Unit at WCH, with a strong focus on embedding research into clinical care.

Engaging with the community is important to me and I volunteer as a netball coach at Rose Park Primary School and have served as a camp doctor many times for children with diabetes, aiming to promote health awareness and support families.

In my personal life, I find solace in outdoor activities and cherish moments with my family. Whether it is a quiet hike in nature or participating in local running events, I can often be spotted jogging in the local neighborhood.

Continuing education is a priority for me, as I strive to stay updated with the latest advancements in pediatric endocrinology. I attend courses and conferences regularly, ensuring my patients receive the best possible care.
